The manufacturing sector is entering a new era in which connectivity – between machines, people, facilities, and data – represents the ultimate competitive advantage. Unified communications technology will be a key enabler of this connected workplace, with the ability to advance three connected goals: safety, efficiency, and productivity. That’s why many forward-looking businesses are transitioning toward systems and devices that enable a seamless exchange of information.
To learn more about how manufacturers are strengthening their communications technology to support a more connected workplace, Motorola Solutions conducted the 2021 Manufacturing Communications Survey.
This year’s survey queried approximately 1,500 U.S. respondents, ranging from C-level executives, to senior and middle managers, to specialists and
coordinators. Their job functions included logistics, warehousing and distribution, maintenance and engineering, IT, administration, sales, marketing, and finance, security, and operations. The survey covered a large cross section of industry specialties, including chemical manufacturing, construction, food and beverage production, industrial and medical manufacturing, and transportation equipment production.
The findings highlight a business sector in transition. One moving toward a world of greater connectivity, automation, intelligence, and innovation that experts dub “Industry 4.0.” This world will be built on unified communications technology and industry leaders are already demonstrating its benefits for both people and productivity.

Motorola Solutions announced its newest radio for firefighters, the APX NEXT XN, designed to meet the most stringent fire industry standards for use in hazard zones and conditions. The APX NEXT XN is part of the company’s APX NEXT portfolio of next-generation Project 25 (P25) mission-critical radios that incorporate data applications for enhanced situational awareness.
The radio is designed to meet the most meticulous fire industry requirements for use in hazard zones, including those related to heat exposure, immersion and drop/impact acceleration. It also meets requirements for software safety, including automated checks of battery capacity and accessory connections. Testing included heating devices to 500 F (260 C) for five minutes and direct flame exposure for 10 seconds. It can be connected to Motorola Solutions’ new XVN500
remote speaker microphone, which is also designed for hazardous environments.

Legacy MICRN System to Retire - Pioneer of Public Safety Interoperability
28 years ago, in 2003, shortly after the historic flood in central Iowa, a group of public safety entities and utilities realized that each of them had disparate radios systems and platforms in which they could not communicate easily or quickly together. The groups got together and created a concept of a regional wide-area radio system so they could easily talk together in emergencies and this system was named MICRN, Metro Incident Communication Response Network.
It used a channel on a commercial two-way radio system of EE, which was located at the Alleman TV towers. It has worked well over the last couple of decades to quickly get parties together during emergencies, like floods, tornados, the recent derecho, etc. With the advancement of the new “P25 public safety interoperability”
in central Iowa, it was determined by the MICRN organization to migrate this communication path to ISICS, the statewide communications platform, and MICRN will be officially retired on 12/31/2021.
EE is proud to have been the provider of the backbone of this communication vehicle for MICRN and its public safety users over the years.
